Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia. An estimated 6.7 million Americans aged 65 years and older had Alzheimer's disease in 2023.1 People with Alzheimer’s disease experience a decline in cognitive function, like memory impairment.2 They also experience symptoms that disrupt their thoughts, emotions, and actions.3

Alzheimer's Symptoms2,4

The most common symptom of Alzheimer’s disease is memory loss, starting gradually with forgetfulness and getting worse over time. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia generally occur in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

People with Alzheimer's disease may:

  • Repeat statements and questions over and over
  • Forget conversations, appointments, or events
  • Misplace items, often putting them in places that don’t make sense
  • Get lost in places they used to know well
  • Eventually forget the names of family members and everyday objects
  • Have difficulty finding the right words

As Alzheimer's disease progresses, people may develop issues with:

  • Concentrating and thinking
  • Multitasking
  • Making sensible decisions
  • Routine activities
  • Mood and behavior

People with Alzheimer's disease do hold on to some skills even as symptoms get worse:

  • Reading or listening to books
  • Telling stories
  • Sharing memories
  • Singing
  • Listening to music
  • Dancing
  • Drawing
  • Crafts
